Vintage Campos Filos Salt Glazed Stoneware Bottle.
While often sold as decorative vases today, these salt-glazed stoneware bottles from Campos Filhos were originally functional vessels designed for storing and transporting liquids.
Wine and Spirits: These bottles were commonly used to hold Portuguese Port wine or other spirits. The thick stoneware helped protect the contents from light and maintained a consistent temperature. Olive Oil: Aveiro, where this was made, has a long tradition of producing ceramic containers for maritime trade, including those for olive oil. Similar stoneware bottles from the same region are frequently identified as vintage olive oil bottles. Household Liquids: Durable salt-glazed stoneware was also standard for everyday items like vinegar, ink, or even household chemicals because of its acid resistance.
Why did they choose Stoneware?
For durability of course, these were fired at extremely high temperatures (around 1,2001,300°C), the clay "vitrifies" to become non-porous and as hard as glass. The "salt glaze" was created by throwing salt into the kiln during firing, which reacted with the clay to form a thin, glassy, and exceptionally hard layer. This ensured the bottle was completely waterproof without needing an internal lead glaze.
The stamp reads "F. C. AAREOSA" at the top and "AGUADA DE CIMA" at the bottom. This bottle was made by Fábrica de Cerâmica da Areosa (often abbreviated to F.C. Areosa or Aareosa). It was produced in Aguada de Cima, a village in the Águeda municipality of Portugal. This region is world-renowned for its traditional stoneware and ceramics production.
The Campos Filhos factory was a prominent pottery producer in Aveiro, Portugal, active during the late 19th and throughout the 20th century. Aveiro is historically known for its salt-glazed stoneware, characterized by its distinctive speckled or "salt-fired" finish. The factory was part of a thriving ceramic industry in Aveiro that utilized local clay and traditional salt-firing kilns. While the "Campos" name was associated with various pottery makers in the region during the first half of the 20th century, Campos Filhos became the most widely recognized for exporting these durable stoneware vessels across Europe and eventually to the U.S. as decorative collectibles.
