TOBY OR CHARACTER JUG?
There seems to be some confusion by reputable dealers as to what is a
Character jug and what is a Toby jug. Character jugs incorporate the
head (and sometimes shoulders) of the character, whilst Toby jugs show
the full figure of the character. The first Toby jugs were made in the
18th century, their name being derived from a humorous song about Toby
Fillpot, a fellow who was more than a little fond of his drink. Charles
Noke of Royal Doulton reinvented Toby jugs during the 1930's, creating the
"character jug" with bright colours and expressionistic faces that were full
of character, based on characters from English history, literature and legend.
