VINTAGE CHINESE BRASS ENGRAVED BOWL WITH A DRAGON AND PHOENIX 4MM THICK SOLID BRASS RIM HEAVY 1,4KG MARKED CHINA WITH FAKE MING DYNASTY SYMBOLS
A VINTAGE HEAVY (1,5KG) CHINESE BRASS BOWL WITH 4MM THICK SOLID BRASS RIM.
ENGRAVED WITH A DRAGON AND PHOENIX BIRD ON THE OUTSIDE.
THERE IS A 'GREEK KEY' PATTERN ALL THE WAY AROUND THE UPPER RIM OF THE BOWL, AS WELL AS AROUND THE BASE.
ON THE BOTTOM THERE IS A SOME KIND OF MARK, A RING OF DRAGONS WITH WHAT LOOKS LIKE A FAKE MING DYNASTY XUANDE EMPEROR MARK, BUT IT IS HEAVILY WORN AND MOST CHARACTERS ARE UNREADABLE. THE PLATE IS ALSO STAMPED 'CHINA', INDICATING THAT IT LIKELY DATES TO THE EARLY 20TH CENTURY.
EVEN THOUGH THIS VASE HAS A FAKE MING DYNASTY MARK DA (STICK MAN SYMBOL) MING (DOUBLE B SYMBOL) IT IS STILL INTERESTING TO NOTE SOME INFO REGARDING THIS PRACTISE. The Great Ming Dynasty ruled China from the mid-fourteenth to the mid-seventeenth century for 276 years (13681644).
Reign marks follow a set format, and a six-character mark can be broken down as follows: the first two characters refer to the dynasty, and are either Da Ming meaning Great Ming dynasty (1368-1644), or Da Qing, translated as Great Qing dynasty (1644-1911); the second two characters refer to the name of the Emperor; and the last two characters, Nian Zhi, mean made for. Four-character reign marks simply omit the first two characters recording the name of the dynasty.
A LATER COPIED MARK IN REVERENCE OR AN OUTRIGHT FAKE? For hundreds of years Chinese artisans copied reign marks from earlier dynasties out of a respect and reverence for these earlier periods. These marks were not necessarily intended to fool buyers into thinking they were buying a genuine earlier work of art. The Xuande (1426-1435) 5th Ming Dynasty emperor period is acknowledged as a high point in the production of bronze works of art, and the vast majority of later bronze censers made during the 17th and 18th centuries have Xuande marks to their bases. OUR BOWL IS A MORE MODERN BRONZE BOWL AND FALLS MORE INTO THE OUTRIGHT FAKE CATEGORY.
