Vintage Chinese Mudman Figurine Fisherman with Baskets of Crabs | From a Private Estate Collection

This beautifully detailed vintage Mudman figurine is a fine example of traditional Shiwan ware, likely dating from the 1930s to early 1950s. It comes from a private estate where the previous owners were passionate collectors of Eastern art, having travelled extensively through China and the Far East. Their collection reflected a deep appreciation for Chinese craftsmanship and cultural symbolism and this piece is no exception.

The figure depicts an elderly fisherman carrying a shoulder pole with two baskets full of sculpted blue crabs a classic symbol of prosperity and success in Chinese culture. His wise expression, flowing robes, and the characteristic drip-glaze in tones of jade green, ochre, and chestnut all speak to the artistry of Shiwan ceramics during this period. The base is marked "China", a hallmark used for export wares during the early 20th century.

In excellent vintage condition, with no chips, cracks, or repairs, the figurine retains its original turned wooden stand. It stands approximately 18 cm tall (including stand), with the figure itself measuring 12 cm long and 6 cm wide. The wooden base is 9 cm in diameter and about 3 cm high.

A striking and meaningful addition to any collection of Chinese art, folk ceramics, or cultural antiques, enriched by both its symbolism and its well-travelled provenance.
