FROM MY COLLECTIONS

GORGEOUS VINTAGE COPELAND SPODE SMALL OVAL PLATTER - PORTLAND VASE -

16cm X 12cm

I had a wall filled with plates of all ages, sizes and shapes. Too stunning, really. They were only ever displayed on the wall but have been packed away in a box for the last 11 years since I moved, but I have been collecting plates for nearly 40 years. They are all for sale now, please see all other listings.

Copeland Spode was famous for his transfer printing under glaze, that's why sometimes you can see a line in the pattern, it was a difficult technique to master -

Beautiful "Portland Vase" mainly blue plus other touches of colour, printed under the glaze with hand applied enamel colour. This back stamp, whilst I cannot read the actual impressed date, began in 1833 and was used until 1970, but the pattern was introduced in 1914 and discontinued in 1940, so it is at least that old, that's 73 years old or more.

The pattern, called the Portland Vase, came about from the history of an actual vase that was created before the birth of Christ, exhumed from a burial ground, smashed by a vandal, restored, nearly smashed again by German bombs, and is still the stuff of incident and intrigue today, the Portland Vase captivates all who have read about it or seen pictures. The original vase was unparalleled in craftsmanship, made of cobalt glass and decorated with white cameo figures at a time when glass blowing was still a new art. The enigmatic vessel was found by tomb-robber-come-archaeologist, Fabrizio Lazzaroin in 1582. Josiah Wedgwood devoted nearly a lifetime to trying to create a satisfactory reproduction.

Condition: Excellent, No chips, no crazing, minor wear mainly to the back and a little bit of wear to the rim on one side. This one I have had for approx 35 years.
