Vintage Delfts Blauw Zenith "Cape of Good Hope Castle" V.O.C Wall Plate.

A fascinating creation indeed and a proud salute to the historical origins of our 'Fairest Cape'.
This very intriguing Delfts Blauw wall plate depicts a number of historical "Cape Colonial" themes.
It has the 5 battlements of the "Cape of Good Hope" Castle emblazoned in the center.
Within the pentagon are the dates "1652 & 1952" intertwined.
1652 was the year that marked the arrival of the Dutch with the V.O.C ( Vereenigde Landsche Ge-Oktroyeerde Oostindische Compagnie) under the command of a certain 'Jan Van Riebeeck'. The V.O.C monogram can be discerned in between the quintupled points of the star, and sided by seraph wings.
Surrounding the center star are the traditional gables of traditional Cape Dutch architecture.
Furthermore we see the likeness of the 5 original ships of Van Riebeeck's fleet that brought the early settlers to the shores of Table Bay.
And not to be missed are the bunches of grapes that tell the story of how our world class vineyards first came to be planted under the supervision of Van Riebeeck himself.
Finally there are the oak leaves and acorns that remind us of the first oak trees planted at the Cape in the Dutch East India Company Gardens.
We do not know the precise date of manufacture of this plate.
It is in superb condition. There are no chips, cracks or crazing.
The back of the plate is signed " Delfts Blauw. Zenith decal. Holland. Nederlands Fabirikaat. The letters 'T.B' are visible below.
It is probably a fairly modern production made at the "Zenith" Delft factory in Holland in the image of the extremely rare early Japanese Edo period blue and white plates known as "Kraak" exported to all of the Dutch territories.
