Vintage Emir Ashford England Joiners Wooden Dowel Hammer

When we think of wooden item construction today, we often get stuck in the process of assembling pieces using glue and nails. 
However, for thousands of years, people have assembled wooden furniture and other items without glue, staples, screws, or even nails. Antique furniture makers use joinery to make stunning pieces of furniture that have stood the test of time, and in some cases are sturdier and more attractive than modern pieces. 
 
One of the oldest methods of joining pieces of wood together is pegged construction, which uses pegs (or dowels) to connect wood joints. The process takes an end-bored dowel and matches it with a tenoned dowel to create a tight and reliable connection. 

It's believed that the first pegged construction methods were used by  as early as  in Egypt, but it wasn't until the 15th century that they became common among European furniture makers. 

In the early days of furniture making, joinery was limited to simple methods like pegged construction. This method was used to construct everything from chairs and tables to chests and cabinets. In addition to being dependable, pegged construction allowed for pieces with complex shapes and angles that would have been impossible to achieve with nails or screws. 

Another famous example from history is the use of wood dowels in the construction of Japanese sword handles. These deadly weapons relied on a long wooden handle to give the user ultimate control over the blade. This handle was composed on multiple wooden pieces, all of which were held together by a small wooden dowel. Remove this miniscule wood peg, and the entire handle would fall apart.

EMIR WOOD (1852-2021):
The Emir company's heritage traces back to 1852 in Remscheid, Germany, where it was established by Friedrich Wilhelm Emmerich.
The UK branch of the company was founded in 1932 in Bermondsey, London. It initially specialized in crafting high-quality wooden planes and other hand tools.For decades, Emir became a leading supplier of sturdy, educational workbenches to schools and colleges throughout the UK and internationally.The company eventually relocated to Ashford, Kent, where it continued to operate for many years.
As woodworking education moved away from traditional hand skills, the demand for classic workbenches declined. The company was voluntarily liquidated in 2021.
