VINTAGE DARK BLUE SPINEL TRILOGY 9CT YELLOW GOLD RING
WELL HALLMARKED, LONDON ASSAY. 375
The feature that strikes you most about this vintage English ring is the strong colour contrast. The main stones are a trilogy of natural dark blue spinels, oval faceted, claw set and totalling 1,17 carats. They are a particularly intriguing dark royal blue colour, almost black in some lights. The stones themselves are large. They have been set side by side and surrounded in a ruff of bright white stones (not diamonds) that contrast really well with the spinel gemstones themselves and the yellow of the 9ct gold. The hallmarks include the indicator for British made, 9 carat gold (375), the jeweller signature, the London assay as well as the date mark for 1989. Although 30 years old, the ring is in excellent condition. It is also a good solid weight of 3,47 grams. The spinel occurs in a range of colours, the red and blue stones being the most sought after. Red spinels are often mistaken for rubies and the blue stones look astonishingly like sapphires. Historically, the spinel has often been used in royal crowns, favoured by jewellers for its excellent brilliance and hardnes as well as the strong colours.
