AN ANCIENT GAME: Many bowls historians believe that the game developed from the Egyptians. One of their pastimes was to play skittles with round stones. Artefacts of this game were found in tombs dating 5,000 B.C. King Henry VIII (king of England 1509-1547) was also a lawn bowler. But he banned the game for those who were not wealthy because tradesmen were spending more time at recreational bowls instead of practising their trades. Englands King James I (King 1603-1625) was also a fan of lawn bowls. He once condemned football and golf but encouraged bowls. Shakespeare was apparently a member of a bowling club, and his plays are littered with references to the sport.

GREAT LEVELING GAME: Lawn bowls is the only sport where it is not uncommon at club level to see players in their seventies or eighties compete against players in their teens or twenties, and yet still be able to win. A modified version of bowls can be played by people who are blind, and many blind bowlers are extremely skilful.

SA BOWLS: Bowls, also known as lawn bowls or lawn bowling, is a sport in which the objective is to roll biased balls so that they stop close to a smaller ball called a "jack" or "kitty".  Bowls as a sport began in South Africa around 1882, when the initial bowling green was commissioned. A lawn bowls club was subsequently established in Port Elizabeth at St Georges Park. South African Bowling Association was founded in 1904 as the governing body for the sport of bowls in South Africa.

WOULD LOOK GREAT FRAMED IN A SQUARE FRAME in any Lawn Bowls club house, library or man cave.
