Description: Vintage Hand-Thrown Expressionist Studio Pottery Mugs - Set of 5 Artisan Stoneware Collection
BRAND NOTICE: Selling online nationwide under our official brand name. Inventory is updated daily and stock availability depends entirely on current store inventory across platforms.
Bring rich sculptural texture and a bold splash of painterly colour to your morning coffee ritual with this striking set of five vintage hand-thrown studio pottery mugs. Shaped on the potter's wheel from robust stoneware clay, each vessel features a stout, gently tapered lower body accented by an architectural ridge and a pulled loop handle. The exterior surfaces serve as a dynamic canvas for an abstract expressionist glaze treatment, displaying a complex, layered blend of running multi-tonal violet, dusty rose, slate blue, ochre, yellow, and deep plum over an unglazed sandy base. Complete with a smooth, matte sand-coloured interior glaze, this highly tactile matching set serves as a functional, artisan-crafted statement ensemble for open rustic shelving, modern breakfast tables, or eclectic kitchen layouts.
Studio pottery of this style surged across Southern Africa during the late 20th century, as independent ceramic artists moved away from uniform, factory-stamped wares toward highly individualized wheel-thrown forms and experimental glaze interactions. The application of multi-layered running glazes relies on complex chemical compositions that interact unpredictably under intense kiln heat, ensuring that while the structural shapes remain a matching set, the fluid colour bursts are completely distinct on each individual piece. The bases are raw, unglazed, and completely flat, showcasing the coarse, iron-speckled texture of the natural stoneware clay matrix with clean wire-cutoff marks visible, entirely free of factory stamps or modern synthetic slip treatments.
Original Intended Use: Domestic artisan table service for coffee, tea. Alternate Suggested Use: Tactile open-shelf kitchen decor display items, unique succulent planters, or artistic studio paint-brush holders.
Made in South Africa, Circa 1980s, making this Artisan Stoneware 40+ years old.
Approximate Dimensions: Diameter 7.5, Height 9cm.
Condition: Excellent vintage studio condition with no post-production damage. Impeccably preserved structural state; all five mugs are completely free from chips, cracks, hairline splits, or post-kiln repairs.
Visible Flaws: Authentic manufacturing irregularities such as raw underglaze pinholes, minor glaze crawl gaps, and slight variations in weight and shape are present, which are entirely characteristic of handmade studio pottery.
