Kutani ware () originated in Japans Ishikawa Prefecture during the 17th century and is renowned for its hand-painted decoration in strong overglaze enamels. Post-war export examples like this one often feature scenes of bijin (beautiful women) in garden settings, framed by peony and chrysanthemum borders.

Each Kutani plate was individually hand-painted, making every piece unique.
