Vintage Japanese Red and Gold Lacquerware Tea Set.

This 10-Piece set is made of lacquerware, a traditional Japanese craft. Featuring a vibrant red base colour decorated with intricate, hand-painted gold floral motifs using a technique called makie. The flower depicted on this red Japanese lacquerware tea set is a stylized chrysanthemum (kiku).

Cultural Significance: The chrysanthemum is a highly significant and popular motif in traditional Japanese art and culture, often symbolizing longevity, nobility, and rejuvenation. Traditional Motifs: It is one of the iconic Japanese flowers frequently used in traditional designs, sometimes appearing in "hanamaru" (round flower) medallions that represent the four seasons. Lacquerware Technique: The design is applied using a gilt or gold powder technique, known as maki-e in Japanese lacquerware (urushi), which involves sprinkling gold or silver powder onto the lacquer to create intricate patterns. Design Context: While some similar sets might feature other motifs like dragons, the design here closely resembles common floral patterns found on vintage Japanese porcelain and lacquer-style items.

The primary purpose of this set is to brew and serve tea. These sets are used for both casual daily use and more formal occasions when hosting guests. The lacquer material is known for its durability, lightweight feel, and ability to retain heat, which enhances the tea-drinking experience. The serving tray helps protect surfaces and frames the teacups during the ritual. They were made by numerous individual artisans or small workshops rather than a single large manufacturer.

Made in Japan early to mid-20th Century. Japan is a country with a rich history in lacquerware (urushi) craftsmanship.

The condition of the mark, which appears to be a metallic sticker or transfer rather than hand-painted characters, also helps date it, as hand-written marks generally pre-date the 1800s and stencilled or mechanical marks are post-1926. **This tea set has a stamp that reads Blue Ribbon Brand***

If your Japanese lacquerware features a "Blue Ribbon Brand" stamp, it is likely an importers mark from an American wholesaler or department store. These stamps were common in the early 20th century, particularly between 1910 and 1940. For example, firms like Oakford & Fahnestock used "Blue Ribbon Brand" as their premium grade for Japanese imports (such as tea and lacquerware) during the 1930s. In 1921, U.S. customs ruled that "Nippon" was no longer an acceptable English term, requiring manufacturers to switch to "Japan" or "Made in Japan". Consequently, any piece bearing "Made in Japan" (without "Occupied") typically dates from 1921 onwards.

Summary of Age:
Oldest: Nippon (18911921)
Middle: Blue Ribbon Brand (Importer mark, often 1910s1930s)
Younger: Made in Japan (1921Present, excluding the 19451952 "Occupied" era)

Made in Japan, Circa 1910s-1930s.

Visible Flaws: The finish shows signs of wear consistent with an antique or vintage item. Some chips to the lacquer and 2 handles have been repaired.
