DESCRIPTION:
An extremely rare and impressive German Retro, glazed terracotta vase in the form of a large ewer.
Hand-painted with chocolate brown annular bands on a matt off-white ground and mint green, white
and brown geometric designs to lower mid-section, with a glossy deep turquoise glazed interior.
MARKS:
Numbers 579-50 and Austria on base. Remnant of silver foil label printed in blue: Keramos Austria,
Carstens Qualität (Quality). Mark Hill of Miller's Antique Guide is of the opinion that Carstens of
Tönnieshof, West Germany actually made these vases with the "Austria" mark because for a number of
years after the Second World War there was still a strong anti-German sentiment in their large export
market in Australia and other countries of the commonwealth and that the "Germany" mark would negatively
effect business dealings in those countries.
CONDITION:
No chips, cracks or crazing.
DIMENSIONS:
Approximately 50cm in height X 18cm in diameter at widest point.
