DESCRIPTION:

An ivory glazed porcelain dinner plate, decorated with a traditional cobalt blue and
white transfer-printed Old Willow design. It tells the story of a rich man's daughter
who falls in love with her father's assistant. The father disapproves of the relationship
and bans the assistant from the house, forcing them to elope. When they are found, the
assistant is killed. The daughter sets fire to the house, dying in the flames. They reunite
in death as two birds, seen at the top of the design. The eponymous willow symbolises sadness.

Made in Occupied Japan. Occupied Japan was printed on pottery and porcelain made during
the American (U.S.A.) occupation of Japan after World War Two (WWII), from 1945-1952.

CONDITION:

No chips, cracks or crazing, with a few scratches and some wear to pattern.
