This cute 10.5cm souvenir plate is from Mozambique, a country discovered in 1544 by the navigator Lourenco Marques when he was exploring the area. Renamed in February 1976 to Maputo after the Maputo River, it is also known as the "City of Acacias" because many of its streets are bordered by acacias, or the "Pearl of the Indian Ocean". It is located 77km from the South African border. It is a melting pot of cultures dominated by the Bantu and Portuguese, but also influenced by Arab, Indian and Chinese cultures.
