Ordinarily I don’t deal in incomplete sets, but these orphaned nestlings are extra-ordinarily well made. They are astonishingly robust and stable for their size. Imbuia nests of this design were quite common once upon a time, but the little tables that used to nestle under the mother tended to be rather flimsy and rickety – of little practical use. That isn’t the case with this quartet.
A big part of their weightiness and stability comes from the fact that they are two-tiered. They also feature linenfold edges, and the most sharply defined and well executed ball and claw detail I’ve seen on pieces of this size. Each table describes 90 degrees of arc, and placed claw to claw, they combine in a circular formation a very respectable 56cm in diameter. The tables stand 44cm tall, the top tier having a radius of 26cm, and the lower tier 19cm. The lower tier stands some 14cm from the floor.
This is a perfect set for a couple who are downsizing to a smaller home, as the kids have moved on, and no longer have the house room for monolithic coffee and occasional tables. Place the tables together, throw a round tablecloth over them, and you have a perfectly adequate tea or coffee table. Keep them separate and they can serve as side, or even wine tables.
