Vintage Partially Glazes Japanese Kyusu Side Handled Tea Pot

Kyusu teapots are traditional Japanese teapots, known for their unique design and historical significance in Japanese tea culture. These teapots are primarily used for brewing green tea, and their design is optimized for this purpose. The kyusu teapot originated in Japan during the Edo period (16031867), influenced by the broader popularity of tea drinking across Asia. Its roots trace back to the rise of tea consumption as part of Japanese culture and ceremonies, particularly after the introduction of tea from China in the 9th century. Over time, kyusu evolved from simple ceramic vessels to more refined and purpose-specific teapots.

The term kyusu means "teapot" in Japanese, but it typically refers to a specific type of teapot with a side handle known as a yokode kyusu. The side handle allows for easy one-handed pouring, which is an ergonomic design meant to minimize wrist strain when serving tea. This design also allows for greater control when pouring tea slowly and delicately.

The purpose of a kyusu is to brew Japanese green tea such as sencha, gyokuro, and bancha. The interior of many kyusu teapots is unglazed, which allows the teapot to develop a unique flavor profile over time as it absorbs the oils from the tea. This is believed to enhance the flavor of future brews. Kyusu teapots are deeply rooted in Japanese tea culture, reflecting both historical traditions and the practical needs of tea drinkers. Their design, crafted for precision and ease, enhances the experience of brewing delicate green teas.

This teapot is in a good vintage condition but has clear signs of use and age, and was clearly not just ornamental, but was indeed used. It has no chips or crack but a fair amount of wear as a result of its use. It is clearly marked on the handle as well as the base, the meaning of which is unknown to us. It is also numbered 3. The base and top has a diameter of about 12 cm. As a complete piece it measures about 24cm X 15cm. A very collectable piece of Japanese handmade pottery.
