VINTAGE PENN JIGMASTER 500 SALTWATER FISHING REEL MADE IN USA

This is a nice old vintage Penn Jigmaster Fishing Reel No. 500. Made in Philladelphia USA since the 1950s.
A favourite among anglers the Penn Jigmaster 500 is easy to use and will last you a lifetime.
It is a Revolving-spool reel or Baitcaster Reel. A baitcaster reel is best for strategically dropping your line in a hot spot like a riverbed. Baitcast reels can handle heavier line and allow for longer casts than spinning gear in the same size range and hence it's also powerful enough to be used as an offshore saltwater fishing reel.
Baitcasters are known as multiplier reels in Europe, on account of their geared line retrieve (one turn of the handle resulting in multiple turns of the spool). Gear Ratio 4:1.
The baitcasting reel is mounted above the rod, hence its other name given to it in New Zealand and Australia, the overhead reel. 
Professional fishermen prefer baitcasters because baitcasting reels allow anglers more control over their casts. Since a baitcaster's spool spins along with the fishing line leaving the reel, a simple flick of the thumb can stop a cast early or slow a lure while it is still in the air. This grants anglers more accuracy in their casts.
