Step back to the heyday of South African tourism with this vintage pine picture frame, stained in a warm, darker tone and fitted with glass. The back still carries its original sticker from the Pilgrims Rest Photographic Studio, run by photographer Christine Gore. Its unusual shape and solid craftsmanship give it plenty of character, making it more than just a frame its a piece of history.
The frame was likely sold as part of the famous dress-up staged photographs that became a tourist staple in Pilgrims Rest during the 1980s and 1990s. Visitors would don period costumes, pose in an old-world setting, and take home their portrait complete with a keepsake frame. While the original photograph is long gone, the frame itself has endured beautifully as a reminder of that quirky tourist tradition. The picture opening measures 29cm x 40cm, with the full frame measuring 38cm x 49cm.
In very good vintage condition with no damage to report, this frame is ready for new life. Use it to showcase your own photo or artwork, or take a creative twist by fitting it with a mirror it would make a striking and unusual decorative piece either way.
