This is a highly collectible, authentic studio pottery milk jug/pitcher from the renowned Evangelical Lutheran Church (ELC) Art and Craft Centre at Rorke's Drift. Standing at approximately 12cm tall, this functional stoneware piece beautifully embodies the unique mid-century South African ceramic tradition. The exterior features a classic speckled oatmeal kaolin glaze decorated with a distinct blue-grey slips narrative figural motif hand-painted around the body. The bottom of the jug is fully marked with impeccable provenance for collectors, featuring the hand-incised signature of master potter Joel Sibisi, the official Rorke's Drift circular globe studio stamp, and the production date code "C-80-81" indicating it was made between 1980 and 1981.
Artist Details
Born at Rorke's Drift in 1945, artist Joel Sibisi is one of the premier master potters to come out of the ELC Ceramic Workshop, which he attended between 1970 and 1971. His work is widely recognized for its monochromatic tones and highly animated, stylized figural decorations of men, animals, and mythical creatures leaping off the surface of his pots. Sibisi's pottery has been exhibited globally and is represented in major public galleries, including the Durban Art Gallery, as well as prestigious private collections both in South Africa and abroad.
Condition Report
The jug is in excellent vintage condition and has been incredibly well-preserved over the decades. The clay body is completely sound, structural integrity is perfectly intact, and there are no aftermarket chips, cracks, or visible hairline fractures anywhere along the rim, handle, base, or body. The original studio glaze retains its beautiful, rich texture and smooth finish without any noticeable surface scratches or wear.
