Title: Vintage Royal Doulton "Gaffers" by Noke D4210 Wall Plate. Manufacturer: Royal Doulton, Made In England. Diameter: 26.1cm. Info: A beautifully crafted plate from Royal Doulton, with the "Gaffers" - "I be all the way from Zummerset" inscription on the bottom of the plate. Impressed with 4 38 on the base of plate, indicating it was manufactured in April 1938. A rare Royal Doulton plate in great condition, the gaffers design was in production from 1921 up to 1939. A lovely Plate for the wall or display cabinet. This particular design was part of the Series ware patterns, originally conceived by Royal Doulton's original art director, Charles Noke. It was very popular and featured "The Gaffer", an old man from Somerset who spoke and dressed in the traditional regional way. The Doulton factory was established in 1815 in Lambeth, South London by John Doulton (1793 - 1873), who had previously been employed at the nearby Fulham Pottery. The company was granted the Royal Warrant by Edward VII in 1901. Production continued at the Lambeth factory until 1956, after which Doulton concentrated on their activities at Burslem. In the 1960s, the company made a series of acquisitions. In 1968 it purchased Minton China, a company founded in 1793, and Dunn Bennett, a company founded in 1876 manufacturing hotel ware. These were followed by Webb Corbett and Beswick in 1969. It is now part of WWRD Holdings Ltd., the name being an acronym for the main components of the business: Waterford, Wedgwood and Royal Doulton. Condition: Very Good, no crazing or chips on the plate, the outer trim is good and there are no scratches on the plate itself. Price: R 795.00 Inc Vat.
