A traditional "cup of friendship" historically used in the Scottish Highlands, also known as a "loving cup". It is used ceremonially to offer a welcome or farewell sip of Scotch whisky to guests.
Historically, it was used as a standard domestic vessel to eat porridge or drink ale. Over the centuries, it became a dedicated ceremonial cup to offer a welcoming or parting drink of Scotch whisky to guests. The dual handles symbolize trust, as sharing the drink required both hands, preventing anyone from holding a weapon.
The mark stamped on the bottom of the base reads "Culfonia Pewter" or "Cultonia Pewter."
Maker Details: This specific quaich was manufactured by Culfonia (sometimes cataloged as Cultonia), a British brand that produced cast pewter giftware and table accessories. This specific maker operated predominantly in the late 20th century (roughly the 1970s through the 1990s). Pewter of this style was mass-produced as a popular souvenir or gift item during this era.
