Description: Vintage 'Sherwoods Ltd. Birmingham" Copper and Brass Oil Lamp Circa 1904-1919 Ref. MA-15
Date: 1904-1919
History: The date Sherwoods was founded is unknown, but, around 1710, they were producing push-up candlesticks with hollow stems. In 1904 they were trading as Isaac Sherwood & Son Ltd.in Birmingham making oil lamps, lanterns, and burners. By 1920 they had taken over Linley & Co. makers of ‘American’ pattern lamps to become Sherwood-Linley. The company was out of business by 1932.
Marks/Observations: The burner shows 'Sherwoods Ltd, B'ham'. However, P.J. Bryant, of Fishponds, Bristol, who were well known for their hand-made copper goods, may have made the actual lamp.
Condition: Good overall condition, in top working order with a wick, the reflector is possibly nickel-plated and does show some tarnishing. No leaks, no major dings, it remains a very attractive conversation piece.
Dimensions: Height to top of reflector is 22cm. Diameter 16.8cm
