Vintage Silver 'South African Wildlife' Butter knife
This very well made, unusual, sterling silver butter knife features a South African scene in relief on the handle and blade. The handle features lions and palm trees, and the lovely blade has palm trees, a springbok, with mountains in the background, all in relief, and the words 'SOUTH AFRICA'. The other side of the blade is stamped with three hallmarks, 'JC' a 'lion' symbol and the number '23'. The 'JC' silversmiths mark, I believe to be of 'Joe Calafato', a well-known South African silversmith/jeweller who specialised in silver jewellery between the 1940's and 1970's, using the trade name 'CANDIDA'. He also manufactured flatware and hollowware, and on occasion used the 'JC' hallmark. The butter knife is in excellent condition and measures 18,7cm in length, and weighs 53,5g. Both the filled handle and blade have been tested as sterling silver.
