Vintage Sterling Silver Cannetille Eilat Stone Brooch/Pendant stamped Silver Israel 925
This magnificent brooch pin, that can also be worn as a pendant, not only has a beautiful ornate beaded cannetille swirl and twisted coil design, but also has as its centerpiece the national stone of Israel - the King Solomon's Stone or Eilat. Although quite worn, consistent with the age of this piece, it is marked on the back what appears to be: Silver Israel 925, a fairly standard mark for pieces that were made in Israel.
Cannetille is a close relative of filigree work. Cannetille is different from filigree in the way that the ornaments are 3-dimensional (such as twisted coils or springs) with some repousse work while filigree is primarily flat. It typically features fine metal wires or thinly hammered sheets. Cannetille work was inspired by embroidery, reputedly the embroidery found in traditional peasant garments. This lovely piece features plate cannetille. Instead of creating a framework of threads, the main body is made from a very thin plate which was usually worked open on which the ornaments were soldered.
This brooch/pendant measures about 4 cm X 4.2 cm, and is in a good condition with some wear to be expected from a piece of this age. Please note that the chain is for demonstration only and is not included.
