Vintage Sudanese / Tuareg Tribal Arm Dagger with Leather Sheath. Superb Leather Work.
An African arm dagger, commonly associated with the Sudanese and Tuareg cultures of North and West Africa. Traditionally, these daggers are worn on the upper left arm using the leather loop on the scabbard, allowing for a rapid draw with the right hand while hidden beneath clothing. While widely used across various cultures in Sudan (such as the Fur, Nuba, and Hadendoa tribes), similar designs are also used by the Tuareg people of Niger and the Sahara Desert. These daggers typically feature a straight, double-edged steel blade that tapers to a sharp point. The hilt is often made of dark wood, sometimes ebony, with a distinctive disc-shaped pommel (skullchrusher). This example's handle is skilfully covered in leather. The scabbard is traditionally made of tooled leather, sometimes utilizing camel or reptile skin. A characteristic feature is the thick, woven leather loop used for arm attachment. Historically, these were functional combat weapons used by warriors, such as those during the late 19th-century Mahdist War in Sudan.
The dagger and scabbard are in excellent condition, displaying exceptional hand-tooled leatherwork.
