Francis Wheatley exhibited his series of oil paintings entitled the Cries of London at the Royal Academy between 1792 and 1795. Two year earlier, the forty-one year old painter had been elected to the Academy in preference to the Kings nominee and, as a consequence, he never secured any further commissions for portraits from the aristocracy. Losing his income entirely, what should have been the crowning glory of his career was its unravelling Wheatley was declared insolvent in 1793 and struggled to make a living until his death in 1801, when the Royal Academy paid his funeral expenses.
 
The Doulton factory was established in 1815 in Lambeth, South London by John Doulton (1793 - 1873), who had previously been employed at the nearby Fulham Pottery
The company was granted the Royal Warrant by Edward VII in 1901. Production continued at the Lambeth factory until 1956, after which Doulton concentrated on their activities at Burslem.
Royal Doulton plate "Bone China" with the number 26 on the stamp indicates a manufacturing date of 1954.
Code numbers were printed on the base of Royal Doulton produced between 1928 until 1954. These numbers appear next to the right of the crown. The rule of thumb with these numbers is to add 1927. For example, if your inked number is '1' the year your item was manufactured in 1928.
 
Condition: Good, with Gold trim on edges in fair condition, the gold trim is slightly faded in places on the inner circle trim, there are no chips or cracks on the plate.
