HISTORICAL INFORMATION:

Tilley storm lamp, model number X246-May, has been manufactured since 1964.
The hydro-pneumatic blowpipe, created by John Tilley in 1813 in England, is the ancestor of the Tilley Lamp.

Despite being more complex and difficult to handle than wick lamps, pressure lamps provide far brighter light. They are also much more sophisticated than wick lamps. Due to the same name of a manufacturer, this type of light is also known as a "Tilley lamp" in the UK and a "Coleman lantern" in North America.

An illustration of the main components of the kerosene burner using a kerosene blowtorchA little pump at the bottom of a pressure lamp's fuel tank presses the kerosene. A burner (gas outlet) is located at the top of the lamp, which has a little opening called a flue up to it. The mantle, a fabric bag coated with chemicals that ignite when heated by the gas flame, is directly beneath the burner.

The brightness of the burner lamp is well recognized. The amount of pressure applied to the wick is what makes it so bright. This pressure enables a consistent illumination and a steady flow of gasoline.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION:

Kerosene is placed in a stainless steel base of the Tilley Storm Pressure Lantern, model no. x246, and a pump is used to pressurize the kerosene vapor. There is a sticker under the base.A glass heat-resistant shade with a black hood on top that has vents rests on the shade's surface. An etched label is on the glass lamp shade. It has a long, curved stainless steel handle that folds down when not in use and a white and pink mantle on the center rod.
