Vintage Waddingtons Cluedo The Great Detective Board Game Made in SA 1972 Edition
A WONDERFUL 1970S SOUTH AFRICAN EDITION CLUEDO BOARD GAME SET MADE IN SOUTH AFRICA UNDER LICENSE OF JOHN WADDINGTON LTD IN THE UK.
IT IS 100% COMPLETE WITH 6 CHARACTERS: MRS. PEACOCK (BLUE), PROFESSOR PLUM (PURPLE), MISS SCARLETT (RED), COLONEL MUSTARD (YELLOW), MRS. WHITE (WHITE) AND REVEREND GREEN (GREEN) AND 6 MURDER WEAPONS: REVOLVER, LEAD PIPE, ROPE, SPANNER, DAGGER, AND CANDLESTICK.
Cluedo can be traced all the way back to 1943! This is when British board game designer Anthony E. Pratt first started working on his idea for a detective board game. The game itself would be published in 1949 by Waddingtons, so it turned 75 years old in 2024!
Anthony E. Pratt was a HUGE mystery fan. In the 1940s, English author Agatha Christie was the most successful mystery writer. Anthony loved these stories, but the idea to gamify them came from his time playing piano in hotels. Country hotels at that time also often hosted murder mystery events, which involved the guests and hired actors solving a pretend murder across the entire hotel.
The final game published in 1949 features six iconic characters Mrs. Peacock (blue), Professor Plum (purple), Miss Scarlett (red), Colonel Mustard (yellow), Mrs. White (white) and Reverend Green (green). It also features the murder victim, who was called Dr. Black in the UK edition and Mr. Boddy in the US release. The original pitch by Anthony and Elva Pratt also featured Mr. Brown, Mr. Gold, Miss Grey and Mrs. Silver, but they were cut from the first edition of the game. Since the game first came out there have been many different editions (more on that later!), but most original characters are still named after colours.
More characters will surely need more murder weapons, and the original game pitch had nine instead of the standard six! The main six weapons are: revolver, lead pipe, rope, spanner, dagger, and candlestick. The original pitch also featured a bomb, a syringe, a shillelagh (a walking stick/club), poison, an axe, and a fire poker. These six were totally dropped for the final game, though some have made appearances in later editions along with other strange weapons, including an oar, a horseshoe, a dog leash, and a trophy!
CLUEDO SOUTH AFRICAN EDITIONS: The first South African Cluedo edition was from the English manufacturer Waddington who started to produce Cluedo in the UK in 1949. From about 1960 the South African company Manhattan Agencies got the licence to produce the South African editions.

JOHN WADDINGTON BPK: Waddingtons was a UK publisher of card and board games operating between 1922 and 1994, when the company was bought by Hasbro. Founded by John Waddington and Wilson Barratt, the company was originally called Waddingtons Limited (from 1905) and its name changed several times, including to Waddington's House of Games in the 1970s and then Waddington Games and finally just Waddingtons. Waddingtons was arguably Europe's best game manufacturer, producing classic board games such as Cluedo, and, of course, Monopoly. It entered into game production in 1922, due to a boom in demand for playing cards around World War I. IT STARTED PRODUCING MONOPOLY IN THE UK IN 1935. IN 1949 IT INTRODUCED CLEUDO WHICH I ALSO HAVE AN 1970S EDITION ON AUCTION THIS WEEK. The organisation expanded, focusing on games, packaging, printing and more. A company that began with only 20 employees was holding a labour force of 3000 in Leeds as early as 1958, and was being sent 100 games a day by board game enthusiasts to become published.
CLUEDO GAMEPLAY: The classic detective game! In Clue, players move from room to room in a mansion to solve the mystery of: who done it, with what, and where? Players are dealt character, weapon, and location cards after the top card from each card type is secretly placed in the confidential file in the middle of the board. Players must move to a room and then make an accusation against a character saying they did it in that room with a specific weapon. The player to the left must show one of any cards accused to the accuser if in that player's hand. Through deductive reasoning each player must figure out which character, weapon, and location are in the secret file. To do this, each player must uncover what cards are in other players hands by making more and more accusations.
