Vintage Wine is a striking heirloom tomato variety known for its large, beefsteak-style fruits, typically weighing between 816 ounces (225450 g). The tomatoes have a unique appearance: rosy-pink skin with yellow-green striping, giving them a marbled, almost antique look. Inside, the flesh is juicy, meaty, and richly flavoredoften described as sweet with a mild, balanced acidity, making it excellent for fresh eating, slicing, and salads.
This variety is indeterminate, meaning it continues to grow and produce fruit throughout the season until frost.
Growing Instructions
1. Starting Seeds
Start seeds indoors 68 weeks before the last frost date.
Sow seeds about ¼ inch (6 mm) deep in seed-starting mix.
Maintain soil temperature around 7080°F (2127°C) for best germination.
Seeds typically germinate in 510 days.
2. Transplanting
Transplant outdoors after the danger of frost has passed and soil has warmed.
Space plants 1824 inches (4560 cm) apart.
Bury part of the stem when transplanting to encourage strong root development.
3. Sun & Soil
Requires full sun (at least 68 hours daily).
Prefers well-draining, nutrient-rich soil with a pH of 6.06.8.
Incorporate compost or organic matter before planting.
4. Watering
Water consistently, about 12 inches (2.55 cm) per week.
Keep soil evenly moist but not waterlogged.
Avoid overhead watering to reduce disease risk.
5. Support
As an indeterminate variety, plants can grow tall and need staking, caging, or trellising for support.
6. Fertilizing
Use a balanced fertilizer at planting.
Switch to a low-nitrogen, higher phosphorus fertilizer once flowering begins to promote fruiting.
7. Harvesting
Ready to harvest in approximately 85 days after transplanting.
Pick when fruits are fully colored and slightly soft to the touch.
Tips for Best Results
Prune suckers to improve airflow and fruit size.
Mulch around plants to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
Watch for common pests (aphids, hornworms) and diseases (blight).
