The VM5 Coil is a specific model of replacement coil within the popular Voopoo PnP series. It is widely used in sub-ohm vaping for its balance of cloud production and flavor.

Signs it is time to replace your vape coil.

• The burnt taste: if you take a puff and it tastes like burnt newspaper or charred toast, the organic cotton inside the coil has likely singed. Once the cotton is burnt, the flavor will not return to normal, and the coil must be replaced.
• Muted or "off" flavor: sometimes a coil doesn't taste burnt, but the flavor becomes dull or starts to taste like a mix of every liquid you've used recently.
• Leaking and gurgling: while leaking can be caused by various issues, an old coil is a common culprit. Over time, the wicking material degrades and loses its ability to hold liquid effectively. This leads to:
  • Gurgling sounds when you inhale.
  • Spit-back (hot droplets of liquid hitting your tongue).
  • Leaking through the airflow vents.
• Reduced vapor production: as residue builds up on the coil, it becomes less efficient at vaporizing the liquid. If you notice your clouds are significantly smaller or thinner than they were when the coil was fresh, it is an indication to replace the coil.

Tips to make your coil last longer

• When replacing an old coil with a new one. Allow the new coil to be soaked with the vape juice for 5 to 10 minutes before you take your first puff.
• Try not to start a vape chain. Taking rapid puffs can dry out the cotton faster, which can lead to premature burning.
• Try to avoid sugary vape juices that are very sweet or dark in colour, as this tends to caramelize on the coil much faster than clear, fruity, or menthol flavors.

Knowing the correct coil type for your tank

• Check the coil housing (the side): almost every modern vape coil has its specifications laser-etched directly onto the metal casing. The casing might show:
  • The brand or model name
  • The resistance
  • Recommended wattage
• Match the tank model: coils are designed to fit specific tanks, not necessarily specific "vapes" (since many batteries can swap tanks). If you know the tank model, you can search for the tank's model replacement coils.

Note that some brands have "families" of coils. For example, a tank that uses "PnP" coils can use any coil in that series, regardless of the resistance.

• Identify your vaping style: if you aren't sure which specific version within a series to get, look at the airflow. There are two types:
  • DTL (direct-to-lung): these coils have large holes and wide chimneys. They usually have a low resistance (below 0.5) and produce large clouds.
  • MTL (mouth-to-lung): these have very small holes and narrow chimneys. They have higher resistance (above 0.8) and feel more like a traditional cigarette.
