1 x medium Sauromatum venosum bulb

The bulb is at least 30 mm in diameter  (see second picture)

They are young so it will be 2-3 years before they flower

They will sprout a single leaf that will remain alive for 4 to 6 months before dying back and increasing its tuber size. Each year its tuber will more than double in size, and so will its subsequent leaf size

Plant in September to October 2026.

It will not grow anytime before September 2026. Do not attempt to force it; you will not be successful. It was removed from the ground in late March and will now remain dormant (as it is biologically programmed) for at least 5 months, often 6 months or more.

Plant Description

The voodoo lily, Sauromatum venosum, is a fascinating tuberous perennial native to parts of Asia, including India, Nepal, and the Himalayan foothills. It grows naturally in woodland and forest-edge habitats, where it experiences warm, wet summers and a dormant period during the cooler, drier months.
This species is best known for its unusual and dramatic flowering habit. In spring, a large flower emerges directly from the dormant tuber before any leaves appear. The flower consists of a mottled purple-brown spathe surrounding a long, dark spadix, creating an exotic appearance. During flowering, it emits a strong odour resembling decaying organic matter, which attracts flies and other insects that act as pollinators. After flowering, a single large leaf develops, supported by a tall stalk patterned with distinctive snake-like markings.
Sauromatum venosum is highly prized by collectors for its unusual appearance and unique life cycle. The large, umbrella-like leaf provides an attractive tropical effect throughout the growing season, while the bizarre flower makes it a popular curiosity among enthusiasts of unusual plants. As the season progresses, the plant stores energy back into its tuber before entering dormancy.
Growing Sauromatum venosum is relatively straightforward. It prefers partial shade to filtered sunlight and rich, well-drained soil with plenty of organic matter. Regular watering during active growth encourages vigorous development, but the soil should be allowed to dry somewhat as the plant approaches dormancy. The tubers should be kept relatively dry during their dormant period to prevent rot. It can tolerate light frost if dormant, but protection from severe cold is recommended. With proper care, it becomes a reliable and intriguing addition to shaded gardens and exotic plant collections.
