Voortrekker Centenary, Mayor of Johannesburg (Laidlaw # 1315)
According to Laidlaw, two similar silver medals exist. The first medal was presented to members of the Johannesburg City Council and civic dignitaries to mark the centenary of the Groot Trek in 1938.
The second medal (this medal) is a bowling prize medal awarded in 1939 by the Mayor at a tournament in the Monica Robinson Memorial Garden on the Randjeslaagte Estate. The estate for the elderly was established in 1936 in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the City of Johannesburg. The Johannesburg Municipal Bowling Greens Association (J.M.B.G.A.) established the garden and organized the event. The medal was adapted from surplus Voortrekker Centenary medals.
The obverse design is taken from the publicly released medal from the SA Mint for the Voortrekker Centenary Laidlaw # 0130.
