Monopoly was patented in 1935 by Charles Darrow and released by Parker Brothers in the USA. The game was actually one of a number of variants in existence at the time, all of which date back to an earlier, 1904 game by Elizabeth J. Magie called The Landlord's Game. Magie was a proponent of the Single Tax put forth by famous author Henry George. THE GAME WAS DESIGNED TO SHOW THE EVILS OF EARNING MONEY FROM RENTING LAND (AS IT LEADS TO THE DESTITUTION OF ALL BUT ONE PLAYER) and the virtues of the proposed Single Tax - players could choose to play under regular rules or alternate "Single Tax" rules.

MONOPOLY SOUTH AFRICAN BILINGUAL EDITIONS:
The first Monopoly edition was from the English manufacturer Waddington, who the UKS Parker Brother's licencee from the very beginning in 1935.
From about 1963 the South African company Metrotoy got licence to produce the South African bilingual editions.

JOHN WADDINGTON BPK:
Waddingtons was a UK publisher of card and board games operating between 1922 and 1994, when the company was bought by Hasbro. Founded by John Waddington and Wilson Barratt, the company was originally called Waddingtons Limited (from 1905) and its name changed several times, including to Waddington's House of Games in the 1970s and then Waddington Games and finally just Waddingtons.
Waddingtons was arguably Europe's best game manufacturer, producing classic board games such as Cluedo, and, of course, Monopoly.
It entered into game production in 1922, due to a boom in demand for playing cards around World War I. IT STARTED PRODUCING MONOPOLY IN THE UK IN 1935. IN 1949 IT INTRODUCED CLEUDO WHICH I ALSO HAVE AN 1970S EDITION ON AUCTION THIS WEEK.
The organisation expanded, focusing on games, packaging, printing and more. A company that began with only 20 employees was holding a labour force of 3000 in Leeds as early as 1958, and was being sent 100 games a day by board game enthusiasts to become published.

MONOPOLY, CLUEDO AND WADDINGTON:
In 1935 the founders of the legendary game monopoly USAs The Parker Brothers, who created the game and visited Waddington. Here they first marketed the game and made Waddington the first company in the UK to publish monopoly. The games success, as is already known, was immense, with the game reaching 80 million sold in 1975 and becoming the biggest selling copyright board game in the world. During WW2 Waddington created a special line of Monopoly board games that could be given to prisoners of war. The pack would include real money, real gold tokens, maps and compasses to help prisoners of war to escape capture and find their way to safety.
In 1949, the company published a new hit board game, Cluedo. This murder mystery game was a huge success for the company that eventually resulted in a movie being made in honour of the game, called Clue (1985) starring Tim Curry.
