| Description | A prime examplle of a WALRUS IVORY TUSK mounted on an ebony base. To use as paperweight / display ormament / conversation piece & for other uses which I will not mention here. The item is 32 cm tall and weighs about 1.1 kg. If the tusk is measured along the curve it is 31 cm long. The tusk has nice wear on the tip and attractive age patina. There are interesting ribs or grooves along the length of the tusk. Please use the the images below to get a better idea of condition and other particulars of the item. |

Walruses are found in the Nort Pole and sub - Antartic regions of the The Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Their tusks are often associated with fighting, but they are, in fact, very important for the survival of the animal since they are also used to propel the animal forward in the ice, to pull the animal out of the water onto the ice, to make breathing holes in the ice when they are under it and to use as an ice pick to, for instance, reach food that is covered in solid ice. Unlike the tusks of, for instance, elephants or warthogs the tusks of the Walrus have only a very small hollow section at the base and are solid ivory for most of their length. A tooth such as this one makes a very nice conversation piece for display in a pub, display case etc. |
