Walter Battiss: "I Invented Myself" The Jack Ginsberg Collection is a landmark 2016 art exhibition and accompanying monograph that comprehensively details the "five lives" and creative evolution of iconic South African modernist artist Walter Battiss.
This 14 page Education Resource created alongside it was compiled by artist and educator Alison Kearney specifically for the Wits Art Museum (WAM) in Johannesburg to help students explore the exhibition, build visual literacy, and understand Battiss's vast artistic legacy.
Curated by Warren Siebrits, the exhibition brought together over 700 artworks, books, and letters spanning several decades. The entire collection was assembled by the prominent South African art collector and philanthropist Jack Ginsberg, who subsequently donated the materials to WAM in 2016.
The collection outlines Battiss's transformations from a naturalist recorder of San rock art to a Post-Impressionist, a Pop printmaker, and ultimately the "King" of his own fictional utopian creation, Fook Island.
