Published by Van Schaik in Pretoria in 1965. The book features the writing and artwork of Walter Battiss, including a large number of line drawings, lithographs, paintings, photographs, poems, and text. Includes an autobiography, and the subject matter ranges from the Limpopo, where the book was conceived, to the Karoo and Upper Karoo of his youth, and north to the islands of Zanzibar, Lamu, Manda and Pate. As such it is also an interesting record of these places at that time, as well as being an important work giving insight into the creative processes of one of South Africa's most acclaimed and enduring artists.
The book was printed Lithographically (in two and four colours and six colours for the reproductions of the paintings).
The dust jacket is complete but shows some edgewear. The cloth boards are very clean and the binding is tight. There is a neat inscription on the inside of the front free endpaper and some of the pages have very light foxing, but the pages are otherwise clean and unmarked. There is some wear to the endpapers, probably insect damage, particularlyto the edge of the rear endpaper, causing a small amount of loss to the edge, but this does not detract significantly from the enjoyment of the book.
