War Memoirs of David Lloyd George, 2 Volumes-Mentions of Gen Jan Smuts

This book (or books) is actually the greatest and most important book of the 20th century. David Lloyd George was Chancellor of the Exchequer in the run up to World War I, became Minister of Munitions to overcome the bottlenecks and crisis in arms production, and then became Prime Minister when the fortunes of the allies were at their lowest ebb.
Seeing as the United States is the successor world power to the British Empire, the history of American foreign policy in the 20th century is impossible to understand without reference to the British situation in World War I. All of the contemporary battlefields: Iraq, Palestine, the Balkans and the late Yugoslavia are prominently featured in these pages.
David Lloyd George saw it all from the catbird seat. After Versailles, Lloyd George spent a decade reading captured documents and the memoirs of his counterparts among both the Entente and Central Powers. His memories were published in 1934, just in time to be ignored in the run up to World War II.
