THE CAPE ARGUS, SUNDAY WAR SPECIAL, Sunday September 3, 1939 FIRST EDITION. Full-width headline:
BRITAIN AT WAR WITH GERMANY. Speaking from No 10 Downing Street, Prime Minister, Mr Neville Chamberlain said : "This morning, the British Ambassador to Berlin handed to the German Government a final note, stating that unless we heard from them by ll o'clock (noon SA time), that they were prepared at once to withdraw their troops from Poland, a state of war would exist between us. "I have to tell you that no such undertaking has been received and consequently this country is at war with Germany."
OTHER EDITIONS TODAY: Developments in the situation will be described in other editions of the Argus later today.
This double spread, unpaginated issue of the Cape Argus has a couple of short, closed edge-tears, and a section of tanning, which was outermost when the paper was folded, as well as a centre fold (across the face of Mr Camberlain), which is rubbed.
