Hendrina Susanna Johanna Joubert was tough, intrepid, and fearless. Stories about her courage and perseverance have become almost legendary. During the Transvaal annexation period, for example, she crossed the Vaal River in full spate, with a waggon loaded with rifles which her husband had obtained when the deputation visited Europe, so preventing the arms from falling into British hands. In times of adversity it was she who encouraged and inspired General Joubert to carry on. Until the end of her eventful life Hendrina Joubert retained a slim elegance, an upright and proud figure, and an aristocratic bearing. Despite her stern looks she was a gentle person at heart.
Her memoirs, compiled by Mrs. M. L. Rompel-Koopman, appeared under the title 'Wat mevrouw generaal Joubert vertelt' in 1915, and are an invaluable cultural-historical document. In it she recounts how the children were taught while on trek, and talks about the clothing worn, home industries, and the illnesses and disasters that befell them all during the Trek."
