'Water Lily' vase George Grainger Worcester 1889-1890 Ref.Aug1
Thomas Grainger, (1783-1839) an apprentice at Robert Chamberlain's Worcester factory, opened his company 'The Royal China Works' in 1801,together with his partner, John Wood. By 1804 they were advertising in the local newspapers and by 1806, they had opened their own shop. George Grainger, following the death of his father, Thomas, took over the business and developed more elaborate ornamental wares, targeting the wealthy industrialists as his clients. He was influenced by the Neo-Rococo era and this shows in his designs. Following the death of George, the company was bought by Royal Worcester.
This is a fabulous piece by George Grainger, measuring 9cm tall and 9cm across the widest part of the trumpet of the flower. The sepals at the base measure 16cm. It remains in excellent condition with two minute rough points on the trumpet. There is a slight 'firing' flaw to the one sepal, showing up as a white spot with a healed firing crack
