This type of flares were used by the RAF to light runways at night so that the pilots could land their aeroplanes in the dark.

Galvanized gooseneck flares had been used on airfields since the 1930's. Described as watering cans full of paraffin and with a wick set in their spouts, around twenty were placed along each edge of the runway with their spouts pointing downwind

Although pilots complained they produced a flickering light that sometimes difficult to see from the air, they were cheap and reliable. But  they could be tricky to extinguish quickly in the event of an air raid.

This is only available once in a lifetime !!!
