Watsonia is a genus in the iridaceae of over 50 species from both the winter and summer rainfall areas of Southern Africa. Many are quite tall with fans of sword-shaped leaves and showy flowers.
There are 56 accepted species in southern Africa, with two varieties and about 112 names either unresolved or regarded as synonyms. All are perennial herbs growing from corms and producing erect spikes of showy flowers. Most are fynbos plants, adapted to a mediterranean type climate, but some occur in the eastern and inland areas of the country and have adapted to a wider range of conditions.
WATSONIA ZEYHERI
This statuesque plant is great for bloom in the Winter. The green sword shaped leaves get to about ½ meter tall, and the elegant flower spikes grow well over the height of the leaves to 1 meter tall. The 35 mm wide flowers are orange and last for several days. There are 20 or more flowers per spike. As the plant matures, it will put out many spikes per plant. The flowers occur in Winter, and make for a nice splash of colour during the dreary days of winter. They also make good cut flowers. Watsonia zeyheri is native to marshy and sandy parts of South Africa
