Offered for sale is a highly collectible monoprint by the contemporary and highly rated South African artist Wayne Barker. This is a digital giclee print with hand painted detail signed witht he artists initials and dated 2017. The image is based on a studio portrait of the world famous Indian Politicain , activist and lawyer who much like Mandela inspired civil rights and freedom movements throughout the world. Gandi was an anti-colonial nationalist a Hindu who was a central driving force facilitating the independence of India from the British state/ Raji largely through persistent non violent resistence and protests , Gandi has a strong link with South Africa having lived in the Country for 21 years from 1921 practising as a lawyer. The image Barker has used is probably a studio portrait from the 1930;s based on the iconic and still relatively youthful appearance of the man . Wayne Barker is a Johannesburg based artist with a career spanning more than 4 decades during which time he has achieved a stellar reputation as a leading avant garde artist working across various media from traditional painting and drawing to installations performance art video and collaborations. This is a relatively subdued and understated artistic statement from Barker but very striking with the artists dramatic use of a red paint thumbprint to create a Bindi on the forhead of Gandi which is strictly speaking inappropriate as the Bindi is traditionally an adornment for married Hindu woman a "holy dot" . Possibly a joke or gender-slur is intended by the artists. The print is signed bottom right in felt pen/ink with the artists initials WB in a quirky sloping scrawl resembling a profile of a dinosaur or the Loch Ness monster and the date 2017.
