WAYNE BARKER "SUPER BORING", FIRST EDITION, IN EXCELLENT CONDITION

This is a major exhibition of older and new works by Wayne Barker, a leading figure in South African Contemporary Art. Barker has challenged convention and pushed the boundaries of art-making for twenty five years. As a multi-media artist; deconstruction and subversion underpin Barkers unique brand of conceptual expressionism. His art always probes the complex history of South Africa. Super Boring is not a mid-career retrospective but rather an exhibition of new work which draws on themes, techniques and strategies that Barker has been utilizing and developing over his entire career. In this sense it is not just a summary of his work to date but also a glimpse into what the future holds.

In this new exhibition he develops and expands the complex web of issues and styles which comprise his entire oeuvre. This includes the digital manipulation of popular Modern South African Art images, the incorporation of traditional crafts, subtle chaotic Expressionist gestures beside neatly outlined Afro-Pop imagery to the ever-present signature neon signage. Barker has produced a new body of work that confronts and questions the new South African culture in all its diverse manifestations, whilst celebrating the underlying force and spirit of optimism that binds and drives this unique country into and beyond 2010.
