Weather Man, The (Nicolas Cage, Michael Caine) (DVD)

The pairing of Nicholas Cage with Michael Caine, as son and father respectively, is remarkably effective — yet I'm still trying to puzzle out how the Americans can rate this movie as a comedy drama. A drama, yes: and a rather good one at too. But let's leave it at that, shall we? 

Sad-faced Nicholas Cage is a marvelous actor, and here he plays David Spritz: successful weatherman on a Chicago TV channel. Well-known professionally wherever he goes, he has about the most screwed-up personal life imaginable! He is separated from his wife Noreen (Hope Davis); his chubby 12-year-old daughter Shelly (Gemmenne de la Peña) is mocked for wearing tight, revealing clothing; and his 15-year-old son Mike (Nicholas Hoult) has a drug-related brush with the law, and now has to contend with a passionate, obviously homosexual rehab counselor in Don (Gil Bellows). And because of his TV-given surname, David is often the target of various fast-food items that are flung at him in the street. 

Trying to come to terms with all of this is David's dignified father, Robert (Michael Caine) — a former Pulitzer prizewinner — who has lymphoma…and only a few months to live!
