A PAIR OF 1950S GOLD PLATED STERLING SILVER CUFFLINKS WITH BLACK AND WHITE JASPERWARE IMAGES OF A GEORGE STUBBS (FAMOUS 18TH CENTURY ENGLISH PAINTER) HORSE.
 
THE CUFFLINKS MEASURE AROUND 20MM IN DIAMETER AND ARE IMPRESSED 'WEDGWOOD MADE IN ENGLAND' ON THE BACK. THE SILVER IS IMPRESSED JW ALONG WITH A BRITISH STERLING SILVER HALLMARK. IT IS ASO ENGRAVED ALONG THE RIM GOLD PLATED.
 
GEORGE STUBBS WAS AN 18TH CENTURY ENGLISH PAINTER, BEST KNOWN FOR HIS PAINTINGS OF HORSES.

WEDGWOOD: Wedgwood is a fine bone china and porcelain pottery brand that was founded in 1759 by Josiah Wedgwood, an English potter and businessman based in Burslem, Staffordshire. Remembered as the Father of English Pottery, Josiah Wedgwood created the well-respected Wedgwood brand through experimenting with clay and eclectic design. He most famously created the Wedgwood Blue, a colour that is now synonymous with the brand and recognisable worldwide. However in 2009 after six years of losses Wedgwood moved all major ceramics production from Barlaston to the industrial outskirts of Jakarta, Indonesia. Only a small number of high-end products - hand-painted figurines and the iconic blue and white china - would continue to be made in England.
 
WHAT IS JASPERWARE: Jasperware is a type of pottery first developed by Josiah Wedgwood in the 1770s. It is described as stoneware, it has an unglazed matte "biscuit" finish and is produced in a number of different colors, of which the most common and best known is a pale blue that has become known as Wedgwood Blue. Relief decorations in contrasting colors (typically in white) are characteristic of jasperware, giving a cameo effect. The reliefs are produced in molds and applied to the ware as sprigs. Sprigging or sprigged decoration is a technique for decorating pottery with low relief shapes made separately from the main body and applied to it before firing.
 
DATING WEDGWOOD CERAMICS:
Wedgwood jasperware can often be dated by the style of potter's marks:
Before 1860: Mark is "Wedgwood". Usually accompanied by other potter markings and a single letter.
From 1860 to 1929: A three-letter mark represents in order, the month, the potter, and the year. The year code starts mid-alphabet with the letter "O" for 1860, the letter "P" for 1861, etc., returning to "A" after "Z". For certain letters there are two possible year dates.
18911908: Marks are "Wedgwood", "England", separated.
19081969: Marks are "Wedgwood", "Made in England", separated, or "Wedgwood England" on small objects like thimbles. After 1929 the typeface of the word "Wedgwood" is changed to sans serif.
1970present: Mark is "Wedgwood Made in England" as single stamp
