WEDGWOOD (1759-present): Wedgwood is a fine bone china and porcelain pottery brand that was founded in 1759 by Josiah Wedgwood, an English potter and businessman based in Burslem, Staffordshire. Remembered as the Father of English Pottery, Josiah Wedgwood created the well-respected Wedgwood brand through experimenting with clay and eclectic design. He most famously created the Wedgwood Blue, a colour that is now synonymous with the brand and recognisable worldwide. In 1986, Waterford Glass Group plc purchased Wedgwood. In 2001 Wedgwood, Waterford and Royal Doulton were placed into WWRD Holdings Limited. In 2009, the high-profile collapse after six years of losses of the Waterford Wedgwood Royal Doulton Group (WWRD) threatened the future of the Wedgwood story. In 2015, the Wedgwood company was purchased by the Finnish consumer goods company Fiskars (itself the custodian of the heritage family brand Fiskars, founded in 1649). Today, production of 'prestige' wares such as hand-painted and limited edition objects continues, and Jasperware is still made by a small team of skilled workers at the Barlaston England factory, while the rest of the company's output is produced in Indonesia.
