The Bilingual Dictionary, originally compiled by D.B. Bosman and I.W. van der Merwe, is one of the most influential and authoritative Afrikaans-English dictionaries in South Africa. It is often simply referred to as "The Bosman and Van der Merwe".
The original team consisted of Prof. Dr. D.B. Bosman and Prof. I.W. van der Merwe, later supplemented by L.W. Hiemstra.
The first edition was published decades ago and it has gone through numerous revisions. The 8th revised edition (1984) is one of the most common voluminous versions on the market.
Originally by Nasionale Boekhandel and later by Tafelberg-Uitgewers and Pharos Dictionaries.
 For decades it was considered the "standard" for translators and language practitioners due to its wealth of idiomatic expressions and technical terms.

In the 1990s, Pharos Dictionaries began to modernize the content of this "old" Bosman and Van der Merwe to include new Afrikaans and English words and usages, which led to the development of newer titles such as this Pharos edition.
