This is a rare and beautiful example of Large Sized Wemyss Plichta Snuffling Pig hand painted with the classic flowering clover design. This one is a Plichta Bovey Tracey and the base is unsigned and would have been painted by one of the Bovey Tracey artists and is useful as a place to keep and display hat pins.
Jan Plichta was a Czech immigrant who lived and worked in London. He never manufactured or decorated anything, he would buy Wemyss product from the Bovey Tracy pottery that had been making Wemyss ware since 1930 and he would buy products in bulk and have them back signed Plichta London or Plichta London England. This is one is signed Plichta London England. Jan disappeared from the records in the mid 1950s, so there not a lot of these around. The Bovey Tracey pottery closed in 1957 after a disastrous strike and the Wemyss name now belongs to Griselda Hill back in its original home of Scotland.
This old fella is 23 cm long and13 cm tall.
Comes in great vintage condition just age grazing.
